Unto the Seneschal of the Middle Kingdom,
The Shire-March of Lochmorrow has fell upon hard times of late. The most recent event was a powerful and active family moving out of the area, but this is merely a symptom of what has been going on in this group for a long time. This is my third stint as seneschal and it was taken reluctantly but as a peer of the realm, I knew someone needed to step up to help salvage the group. During this year, there has not been growth but reduction. I have not the energy to dedicate to saving the group with such a small core.
Upon realizing this, I thought what did I have the energy to do? Fight. We have regular fighter practices and I go to run them no matter how few people show up. I can point people in the right direction, but we had few people to point them to. But I looked to our friends to our east, the Barony of Illiton, and they have many people. Perhaps that was the answer.
Lochmorrow is located in a college town. The group was founded in 1982, but has had many down periods. These are usually caused by a lack of student participation. We are in one of those now. I look around at many college communities and I see ties to Baronies. I think that is what we need. So I brought up the idea of becoming a Canton of the Barony to the Baron and Baroness of Illiton. They thought it was worth pursuing.
At that point I brought it up at the next Lochmorrow meeting. The idea of becoming part of something larger and more connected to the rest of the SCA, was met with great enthusiasm. I put it out on the mailing list as well. Many questions were asked of what it meant. I explained that we would still be able to hold our own functions, but would also be part of the Barony to help us as needed. At the next meeting the idea was met with unanimous approval.
This letter is the official request from the March of Lochmorrow to have our status changed to the College (Canton) of Lochmorrow, part of the Barony of Illiton.
